About the artist
Edward Middleditch was born in Chelmsford, Essex. He served overseas during the Second World War, receiving the Military Cross in 1945. He studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic and Royal College of Art (RCA, 1948-1952) and his realist paintings of domestic scenes led to his association with the ‘Kitchen Sink School’, an informal group of RCA graduates, John Bratby, Derrick Greaves and Jack Smith. Middleditch’s first solo show was held at Beaux Arts (London, 1954) where he continued to exhibit until 1962. He held various teaching posts, including Head of Fine Art at Norwich School of Art (1964-1984). Exhibitions included a Arts Council and South Bank Centre retrospective (1987-1988) and a show at James Hyman Fine Art, (London, 2006).
