About the artist
Richard Robbins was born in Hampstead Garden Suburb, London. His father, Lord Robbins, later was Chair of the 1963 Committee Report on Higher Education. After a brief time in the Army, Robbins went to Oxford, leaving with a fourth class degree, but love for art. He studied at Goldsmith’s, Ruskin and Slade Schools of Art, then from 1952, taught art. His teaching career continued at Camberwell and Hornsey Schools of Art – he was Head of Painting (1984–90) and Honorary Professor at Middlesex University. He was elected an honorary member of the Royal Society of British Artists (2004) and had a long career in painting, sculpture and poetry, regularly showing his work. A keen golfer, he worked on bronzes of golfers prior to his death in 2009.
