Country: UK
City: London
Place: Cabinet Office, 70 Whitehall
George III, King of Great Britain and Ireland, and King of Hanover, sits in a relaxed pose beside an ornate side table, upon which rest his hat and sword. George III wears a bright red coat, which contrasts with the green upholstered chair and green hue of the background. Probably commissioned from the artist by the King himself, the original work on which this copy is based was painted by Johann Zoffany, along with a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1771 and remains in the Royal Collection. This much later version is too dissimilar to the original to have been copied directly from it and may have been inspired by a mezzotint print after the original.
