Country: UK
City: London
Place: Cabinet Office, 70 Whitehall
Queen Charlotte is seated in a relaxed pose, despite being dressed formally in a lavish lace-trimmed dress, a black lace shawl and several pieces of pearl jewellery. Probably commissioned from the artist by the King himself, the original work on which this copy is based was painted by Johann Zoffany as a pendant to a portrait of George III in 1771 and remains in the Royal Collection. This much later version is too dissimilar to the original to have been copied directly from it and may have been inspired by a mezzotint print after the original.
