Quebec is the capital of the region of Quebec in the east of Canada. It is strategically located above a sudden narrowing of the St Lawrence River, and was first settled in 1608. The region was claimed by the French in 1534 and was a French colony (New France) until ceded to Britain in 1763. The city remains a cultural centre of French-speaking Canada, housing Laval University. St Lawrence River flows through North America and Canada and belongs to one of the world's greatest water systems, draining the Great Lakes into the Atlantic Ocean. At Quebec it broadens into a long estuary which gradually merges with the Gulf of St Lawrence.
