This work relates to an installation by Richard Wilson, also called "Slice of Reality", which was produced as part of the North Meadow Sculpture Project in East London. A number of leading British artists were commissioned to produce works for this project, which was linked to the Millennium Dome. Wilson's installation consisted of a section of a thirty-year-old, 600-ton commercial dredger, moored on the banks of the Thames. The Millennium Dome can be seen here in the background. "Slice of Reality" reminded viewers of the shipbuilding industry which had once dominated this stretch of the river, and also evoked the way the Meridian Line bisects the land on which the Dome sits.
