About the work
- Location

Country: Netherlands
City: The Hague
Place: British Embassy
This aristocratic woman wears a ruff, a loose gown with matching bodice, beneath which is a fine linen smock, and an embroidered linen apron. On her head is an ornate, beaded cap with black feathers. In contrast to her elegant yet restrained attire, her brown hair, brushed off the face, appears somewhat unkempt, reflecting a contemporary trend for more naturalistic hairstyles than those represented in earlier Jacobean portraits.
