This tranquil landscape, suffused in golden light, offers a view over fields and hedges to a distant church perched on top of a hill. Enid Hay’s painting, with its soft edged romanticism, has a wistful feel typical of the French landscapes produced by the Barbizon school in the mid 1800s. Painters such as Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet created hazy landscapes inspired by the rural landscape of Fontainebleau Forest near the village of Barbizon in north-central France. The Barbizon painters paved the way for the later generation of Impressionist painters (particularly the study of nature at close quarters by painting outside) who in turn ushered in a whole new generation of post-Impressionist painters around the time that Hay was working.
