This 16th-century work from the Florentine school depicts Leonard of Noblac (traditionally thought to have died in 559), who is associated with the town and abbey of Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat in the Limousin region of France. Leonard became one of the most venerated saints of the late Middle Ages. Among his miracles was the release of prisoners and as a result he is commonly depicted as an abbot holding chains, locks or manacles (as seen here).
