This painting is part of a series of works by Turnbull entitled "Houses into Flats", all of which were inspired by architectural plans and elevations. The name of the series was taken from a handbook published in 1947, aimed at addressing the shortage of housing in post-war Britain. An engraving of 1805 provided the visual source for this work, which shows a bridge in plan and elevation. Turnbull regards diagrams as forms of coded visual data, with different (though not inferior) representational conventions to traditionally "artistic" means of depicting structures. We do not have to view this painting simply as the representation of a bridge, but can also appreciate the image for its formal, abstract qualities.
