About the artist
William Carter was a portrait, animal and still life painter. He was born at Swaffham in Norfolk, the son of animal painter Samuel John Carter. His brother, Howard, also became an artist and Egyptologist. Carter studied at the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited his work at the Academy from 1883. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1884 and of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1915. Carter lived in Swaffham, but had a studio in Chelsea. He died in Swaffham at the age of 76.
Richard Josey was a mezzotint engraver of portraits and sentimental subjects after British 18th-century painters and contemporary artists. He worked in London and Buckinghamshire and was the father of mezzotint and line engraver John William Josey (born 1866).
