This lithographic print, apparently based on a fine graphite drawing, shows the Governor-General of Canada, Frederick Arthur Stanley, wearing a neat three-piece suit and looking away from the viewer. The pose of the sitter and the format of the portrait (a head and shoulders view, with the drawing of the torso fading towards the bottom of the image) are common features of portraits by the artist Charles William Walton and may indicate that Walton made such works for a particular series of portraits.

Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, was a politician and became Governor-General of Canada. He was the son of the former British Prime Minister, Edward George Geoffrey Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (1799-1869).

Little is known of the draughtsman, lithographer and publisher of portraits Charles William Walton. There are 13 portrait lithographs by the artist in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. Many of the works he produced were of contemporary figures, including Francis Thomas de Grey Cowper, Seventh Earl Cowper (1834¬-1905), who became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland; Charlotte Anne Montagu-Douglas-Scott (née Thynne), Duchess of Buccleuch (1811-1895), who served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria; and former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield (1804-1881). Some of Walton’s portraits were used to illustrate books.
