This view of the Grand Canal in Venice was one of nine paintings presented to the Government Art Collection in 1953 by Lady Helen Venetia Vincent (née Duncombe, 1866-1954), Viscountess d'Abernon. The Viscountess was the widow of Edgar Vincent, Viscount D'Abernon (1857-1941), a financier and diplomat who was, for a time, chairman of the Royal Commission on National Museums and Public Galleries (1927-37), as well as a Trustee of the National Gallery and later the Tate.
