A leafy bouquet of orange and white blooms bursts out from a green vase placed on a table with apples on either side. In 1930, The Sunday Times described Stanley Grimm as ‘…an instinctive painter with a large way of looking at things and a downright way of setting them down’. Born in London, Grimm was raised by relatives in Russia when he was orphaned at an early age. He studied at Riga Art School in Latvia (1910–13) and in Munich (1913–14) where he was strongly influenced by the Blaue Reiter group. When the First World War broke out, Grimm was interned at Ruhleben until 1916. In 1918 he was retained in Russia to produce propaganda imagery for the Bolshevik authorities for the anniversary of the revolution. Grimm returned to London on a smuggler’s fishing boat, becoming a fashionable portrait painter, who also specialised in landscapes and floral still lifes.
