This London scene includes Northumberland House, on Trafalgar Square, and a view along Charing Cross. The artist, William Henry Haines, exhibited a view of 'Northumberland House' at the 'Art Treasures' exhibition in Darwen, Lancashire, in 1879. However, it may not have been this work because it is a subject he painted more than once. A version now in the Royal Bank of Scotland Art Collection is dated 1879, while another was sold through Bonham’s, London, on 5 April 1990.

Northumberland House, built in around 1605, was located at the western end of the Strand. It was the London residence of the Earls and Dukes of Northumberland. During the early 19th century, Trafalgar Square was constructed around the house but the building was demolished just before this work was painted, in 1874.

William Henry Haines was a painter, mainly of domestic scenes. He was based in London and exhibited between 1843 and 1884, showing an impressive 108 works at the Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street, 40 at the British Institution, 30 at the Royal Academy and at least 45 at other venues.
