About the artist
Patrick George was born in Manchester and after leaving school in 1939 went to study at Edinburgh College of Art. After the war, he entered Camberwell School of Art in 1946, where among the teachers were Victor Pasmore, Lawrence Gowing and William Coldstream. In 1949 when Coldstream was made professor at the Slade School of Fine Art, Patrick George accompanied him to teach there one day a week. He took a post in Nigeria in 1959 and in 1961 moved to a cottage at Hickbush in Suffolk, the landscape around which was to form the subject of many of his subsequent paintings. His works can be found in several collections, including Tate.
