Although primarily known as an abstract expressionist painter, Bernard Cohen has also extensively dealt in printmaking. The artist developed amidst a rise in the status of screen printing as a fine art medium in the 1960s, and a number of his prints and editions were featured in the British Council’s celebrated 2003 publication 'As is When: A Boom in British Printmaking 1961-1972'. 

Cohen's paintings are concerned with process as much as image, with an early influence being abstract Expressionism, often involving overlapping patterns, shapes and line, producing multiple images within each composition. This complexity invites us to spend time understanding the relationships between these different elements as well as experiencing them together as one coherent picture. Both individually and collectively, Cohen’s works can be seen as a series of diagrams about painting.

Bernard Cohen is regarded as one of the leading British abstract artists of his time. The younger brother of the artist Harold Cohen, he was born in London of Polish-Russian parents and trained at the Slade School of Art, London, from 1951 to 1954. He spent two years in France, Spain and Italy before holding his first solo exhibition in London in 1958. He has since held many solo shows, both in the UK and abroad, and his work is represented in public collections including Tate London; Mellon Collection, Yale; University of New Mexico, Albuquerque and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Cohen has taught at many art schools and was Slade Professor at the Slade School of Art, part of University College London, from 1988 to 2000.
