    The main vessel in this maritime view is a 103 tonne lugger, known as Emmetje. It was built in 1827 and was owned by Robert Sherard, sixth Earl of Harborough (1797–1859). The ‘ship-rigged yacht’ seen in the right background is the Falcon, owned by Charles Anderson-Pelham, first Earl of Yarborough (1781–1846), the founder of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Condy painted several ship portraits of the Falcon, including: Lord Yarborough’s yacht Falcon off Ranehead [sic], Plymouth (sold through Sotheby’s in 1986), Falcon Running up China Coast towards Hong Kong (sold through Christie’s in 1999) and Lord Yarborough’s Yacht Falcon (City Museum and Art Gallery, Plymouth). 
  • About the artist
    Nicholas Matthews Condy the younger was the son of marine artist Nicholas Condy (1793-1857). There has long been confusion regarding the attribution of their works. Nicholas Matthews Condy was born in Plymouth and was intended for the army, which he entered for a short time, later joining his father to paint for the rest of his short life.
