    This work depicts the Royal Arms for use in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; the personal arms of HM The Queen. This royal coat of arms has been in use from 1837 to the present day. The Royal arms are displayed in all British embassy and consulate buildings, throughout the world. Today they are generally metal wall plaques. This early 19th-century painted version was formerly on display in a government building in Rome.

    The inscription on the garter, which reads ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense’, is an Anglo-Norman phrase loosely meaning ‘Shamed be he who thinks evil of it.’
