An autograph replica of this portrait was bought by subscription by the Oriental Club, London, in 1916 and remains in the club's collection today. Another version is in Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa. The three half-length portraits are based on John Collier's full-length work, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1911 and titled 'On the North-West frontier; F. M. the Viscount Kitchener of Khartoum, O.M., G.C.B.’. The work was described in the press as follows:
'The famous field-marshal stands in an Indian mountain pass facing the spectator. In the background there is a charger, attended by an Indian orderly. The viscount's features are perfect. A characteristic dark frown spreads over the brow. Only in that way is the strong, silent character of the commanding personality perceived.'
The full-length portrait is owned by the Crown Estate.
