About the artist
Samuel Melton Fisher was born in London and educated at Dulwich College, in France, at the Royal Academy Schools of Art, London (where he was awarded a gold medal and a travelling scholarship) and also as a pupil of French painter Bonaffé, in Paris. Fisher then spent ten years working in Italy. He exhibited portraits and Italian genre scenes at the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters between 1878 and 1940, from residences in Venice and London. He was elected a full Royal Academician in 1924. He died in Camberly at the age of 83. His son, Stafani Melton Fisher also became a portrait painter.
