Figurative forms and abstract shapes of colour inspired by nature are rendered in blockprint. Here, the unusual upward perspective and the pink and orange tones help to create an evocative image of seed heads waving in the breeze.

Since the 1970s, Olwen Jones has made many paintings and prints inspired by the flora and fauna in various botanical gardens and glass houses. The Government Art Collection has several of these botanically inspired prints, including one that shows the Lily House at London’s Kew Gardens.

Olwen Jones was born in London and studied at Harrow School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, further training under the printmaker and illustrator Gertrude Hermes (1901–1983). She has exhibited in the UK since 1971, and is a fellow of both The Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. She has lived and worked near Colchester for many years, married to the late artist Charles Bartlett.
