When this work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 1809, a reviewer writing for ‘The Graphic’, commented : ‘Mr. C. H. H. McCartney’s spacious ‘Moorland’ and Mr. Niels M. Lund’s ‘The Land o’ the Leal,’ showing the junction of two rapidly rushing rivers, are remarkably good works, combining accurate landscape draughtsmanship with atmospheric truth of effect’.
While another reviewer for the ‘Dundee Advertiser’, commented: ‘C. H. H. McCartney’s ‘Moorland’ is full of tender charm’.
