The sitter depicted in this 19th-century painting represents Sir Henry Chamberlain. He was the British Consul General in Rio de Janeiro from 8 April 1815 until 24 October 1819. Subsequently, he became chargé d’affaires when, together with Sir Charles Stuart de Rothesay he was in the position to negotiate a commercial treaty with Brazil. Chamberlain was created a baronet on 22 February 1828.
Chamberlain married Elizabeth Horrod of Exeter in 1795 and had two sons and a daughter. The sitter’s eldest son was the author of a book – Picturesque Views of Rio de Janeiro- written in 1821.
The portrait was presented as a gift to the British Embassy in Rio in March 1950 by Señor Gastao Nothman of the Brazilian Embassy in London. He had acquired the painting from Neville Henry Hargreaves Chamberlain, a later member of the Chamberlain family.
