  • About the artist
Anthony Highmore was a painter of portraits and topographical landscapes. He was born in London to the artist Joseph Highmore (1692-1780), who was one of the most important artists of the 18th century. Anthony was a pupil of his father and worked with him up to the mid 1750s. He retired from painting at the same time as his father in the early 1760s.
John Tinney (died 1761), publisher, engraver and printseller, was the son of a member of the Merchant Taylor’s Company. For seven years he was apprenticed to the engraver John Stuart. Tinney established his own print shop in Fleet Street from the 1730s, where he sold a range of items, including imported French prints, prints after his own works, maps and drawing books.
