About the artist
Carlile Henry Hayes Macartney, barrister, landscape artist and horologist, was born in Naples. He married Louisa Gardiner and is known to have travelled on the continent and in the Middle East. He lived at addresses in London until 1891, when he moved to Kent. By 1893 he was living at Foxhold, Crookham in Berkshire. Macartney exhibited works at the Dudley Gallery, the Grosvenor Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Manchester City Art Gallery and at the Royal Academy, London. He died at Crookham in 1924. Today, portraits by Macartney are in the collections of the British Dental Association Museum and the Royal Society of Medicine, London. A watercolour landscape by him is in the Tate Collection, London.
