This triptych by Lynn Bushell presents three views of a landscape in a fascinating blend of figurative and abstract styles. Each composition is based on a patchwork-like arrangement of abstract rhomboids and curves, some of which are striped or overlaid with irregular forms. The distinct divisions between each shape, and their contrasting colours, suggest images of mown cornfields or furrowed earth. The landscape seen in the wider central canvas is bisected by the more recognisable depiction of hedgerows, trees and cottages. The two canvases that flank it are narrower and composed of more abstract landscape elements.

Lynn Bushell was born in East Anglia and studied art history and philosophy at Edinburgh University, before going on to study fine art at Edinburgh College of Art. She lectured at universities in London, and in 1985 published a novel entitled 'The Glass House'. Since 1993 Bushell has lived for part of each year in France where she regularly exhibits her work. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held in London galleries including Roy Miles Fine Art and The Rotunda Gallery in Hampstead. She has taught at Hornsey College of Art; Middlesex University; and since 1990, with the Open University. Bushell also writes for British newspapers and periodicals such as The Guardian, The Observer and Art Review, and was previously Features Editor for Vanity Fair magazine.
