Margaret Fisher Prout was born in London, the daughter of artist, Mark Fisher. Following tuition from her father, she studied at the Slade School of Art (1894–97). She exhibited at the New English Art Club from 1906, becoming a member in 1925. Preferring to teach rather than exhibit her work, she taught life drawing at Hammersmith School of Arts and Crafts before 1914 – a rare example of a woman holding such a post. She exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1921, and after her marriage to John Prout, a Sussex farmer, she designed gardens, many of which featured in her paintings. A retrospective of her work was held in Worthing Art Gallery in 1961 and her work is held in public collections including the Tate.
