Edward III is dressed in a suit of armour. He rests his sword over his right shoulder and, as well as a large crown over his helmet, there are two smaller crowns on his sword. These represent England and France, alluding to his brief sovereignty over France. The pose of Edward III in this portrait is similar to an engraved portrait of him made by the engraver and antiquary George Virtue (1684–1756) and published in 1732. This work was therefore probably made some time after the publication of Virtue’s image. -
