About the artist
Born in Sheffield in 1927, Derrick Greaves was an apprentice sign writer before studying at the RCA (1948-52). As a student, his work was included in the seminal Young Contemporaries exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1952, followed by his first solo exhibition at the Beaux Arts Gallery, London in 1953. From the mid 1950s to 60s he taught at St Martin’s School of Art in London and exhibited widely. He represented Britain at the 1956 Venice Biennale. In 1983 Greaves was appointed Head of Printmaking at the Norwich School of Art, a position he held until 1991. As a painter and printmaker, he produces bold, colourful images, often using line, of an iconic and witty nature.
