About the artist
Ellis William Roberts, portrait painter, was born in Burslem, Staffordshire. He studied at the Wedgwood Institute, Burslem and at the Minton Memorial Art School, Stoke-on-Trent. He then continued his studies at the Royal College of Art in London and at the Académie Julian in Paris. He settled in London where he exhibited in work from 1886, and died in Brighton. Described as a 'Crayon Painter' in the Royal Academy list of exhibitors, he submitted a number of society portraits to Academy shows.
