  • About the artist
    Michael Salaman was born in Porlock, Somerset and studied at Slade School of Art (1928–31) and Ruskin School of Art, Oxford (1930–31). He moved to France in 1933 where he studied at the Académie Ranson, Paris for a year. He remained in France with his family until 1939. During the Second World War he served in the Auxiliary Ambulance Service and worked for MI6 in Tunis and Algiers. He enjoyed a teaching career of nearly 30 years at Camberwell, Chelsea and the Royal Academy Schools of Art. A major retrospective of his work was held at the Morley Gallery, London (1975), and another after his death at the Ben Uri Art Gallery, London (1996). His work is represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the South London Gallery.
