About the work

Country: Morocco
City: Rabat
Place: British Embassy
This painting was dated to the second half of the 19th century, approximately 1870, by Charles Newton of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The ‘Embassy’ of the title might well have been a commercial or political representation of HM government ministers sent to negotiate rather than the new British Ambassador presenting his credentials.
It is an unusual subject for a British artist to portray during the 19th century, as it was difficult for them to go to Morocco, which was under French control at the time.
