    Born in Llanelli, Wales, Cerith Wyn Evans studied art at Dyfed College of Art between 1976-77, and at St Martin’s School of Art, London. After completing an MA in Film and Video at the Royal College of Art, he was assistant to the artist and filmmaker, Derek Jarman. For most of his early career he made short experimental films, and it was not until the early 1990s that he made sculptural and installation pieces. Reflecting his interest in film history and literature, Wyn Evans’ pieces are often highly theatrical. In his Firework series from the 1990s, wooden structures spell out texts that burn over a designated period of time. Chandelier (2003), his installation of five enormous crystal sculptures first exhibited in London, incorporate texts that are translated into the flashing light signals of Morse code. In 2003, Wyn Evans was one of several artists who represented Wales at the 50th International Venice Biennale in the inaugural Welsh Pavilion. With an interest in a broad range of disciplines, Wyn Evans’s practice moves fluidly between art forms. He famously introduced the artist Lucien Freud to the performer and model Leigh Bowery; and also, artist Sarah Lucas to Michael Clark, the experimental dancer-choreographer – resulting in their collaborative performance piece in 2001. Wyn Evans has exhibited widely around the world including shows in France, Japan, Italy, Germany and New York. In 1997 his work featured in the Royal Academy’s popular Sensation exhibition.
