Jason Martin's works are concerned with the processes of painting, rather than the depiction of particular subjects or the expression of certain ideas. Though "F1" appears delicate and intricate, it was produced with a single stroke of the brush. Martin makes a special brush for each painting, corresponding in size to the dimensions of the work. Variety is produced through his choices of colour, material, size, and the speed at which he works. For "F1" Martin covered the stainless steel support with acrylic gel and then dragged a piece of corrugated card across the surface to produce subtle ripples.
