Boyd Webb's photograph shows what appears to be a mass of inflatable giraffes, heaped around a blow-up globe like rugby players in a scrum. Webb was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, but studied at the Royal College of Art in London. He began working in photography while at the Royal College, taking pictures of actors and props in carefully staged settings. An enduring feature of his work has been a concern with ecological issues, although his approach has been discreetly subversive rather than overtly political. Drawing on Victorian genre painting and the sensibility of Surrealism, Webb's works transform the everyday into something more fantastic.
