Fionnuala Boyd and Leslie Evans started working together as Boyd & Evans in 1968. During 1999 they spent three months travelling through California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming. The photographs, prints and paintings which resulted from this trip emphasise the vastness of the American landscape. Amargosa Opera House in the small Californian town of Death Valley Junction was once a rundown hotel. It was opened as a dance theatre in the 1960s by a New York ballet dancer who happened to get a flat tyre in the town and stayed there ever since. Here, the bleak opera house is set against a seemingly endless, empty road, and is dominated by brooding evening rain clouds, highlighting the sense of isolation associated with some small towns in the United States.
