David Leapman's paintings defy our attempts to impose fixed meanings onto them. The two forms within this painting look like boxes perched on long sticks, or possibly open hands. But then, almost as soon as we have recognised them as such, we notice something incongruous, and the meaning slips away again. They are like a visual equivalent of that moment when the precise word we are fumbling for is just on the very tip of our tongue, before it eludes us completely. Although the precision of line and use of bold, obstinate colours seems to establish a framework of absolute values, Leapman's enigmatic painting embraces uncertainty and irresolution.
