The tangle of ribbon-like shapes which lie over and under one another in this painting by Marta Marcé creates depth, giving the composition a sense of three-dimensionality. Her paintings are inspired by the systems involved in games and play activities, and Untitled (MM733) seems to have evolved from the visual possibilities of a Scalectrix set, with tracks looping in circles and forming bridges over each other. The title, with its combination of a reference code and the word “Untitled”, helps focus our attention on the visual components of the work, avoiding the loaded meanings of more poetic titles which can obscure our interpretation. Marcé was born in Barcelone and studied at the Royal College of Art in London.
