  • About the artist
Born into a family of mineworkers in South Tyneside, George Robson spent almost 30 years working for the National Union of Mineworkers at their headquarters in Durham. After retiring in 1993, he focused on his work as an artist, choosing the mining communities of North Eastern England as a central theme of his work. The Durham Miners’ Gala, a major annual event that has taken place since 1871 in the region, features regularly in his works – an event that Robson believes was under-represented in art. He has had numerous exhibitions in Durham and Newcastle and has undertaken commissions for the Easington District public art scheme, developed as part of a coalfield regeneration project.
