About the artist
Watercolour painter Joshua Cristall was born in London; the son of a mariner. In 1792 he enrolled as a student engraver at the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited figure subjects in London between 1803 and 1847, at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Old Water-Colour Society, where he showed 376 works in total. Cristall served as President of the Old Watercolour Society in 1816, 1819 and from 1821 to 1831. He died in St John’s Wood at the age of 79.
