'Needle' encapsulates Paul Morrison's graphic style in whimsically-drawn natural motifs that seem familiar from Grimm's Fairy Tales and Walt Disney cartoons. Like a photographic negative, his monochromatic composition creates vivid contrasts. By eliminating colour he encourages us to bring our own impressions of colour to the work, what he describes as the "colour behind the eye". Morrison's sources include Victorian botanical guidebooks, cartoons and storybooks. His crisp style also reveals the influence of Albrecht Dürer's mediaeval prints and Patrick Caulfield's modern screen prints.
