  • About the work
A woman sits quietly alone in an empty Chinese restaurant with her back to us. Her isolation is emphasised by the unoccupied places around her and the partially open door, which perhaps suggests that someone has just left. The profoundly still atmosphere is ruffled slightly by the sweep of her grey-streaked hair and its echo in the gentle swish of fish tails in the painted mural. A muted palette of blue-greys, greens and white permeates the image, broken intermittently by the vivid orange splashes of the fish and table legs, and by the shiny black lacquer table top. Starkey’s photograph is titled with the date it was taken, without reference to the subject.
