  • About the artist
    Charles Green produced genre and historical subjects in oil and watercolour. He lived in North London throughout his career. Green was elected a member the New Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1867. He made drawings for the illustrated newspaper ‘The Graphic’ and the periodical ‘Once a Week’, and also made book illustrations, including designs for ‘Robin Hood’ and novels by Charles Dickens. His best known work is probably ‘The Girl I Left Behind Me’ (1886, Leicester Museums and Galleries). Green’s elder brother, H. Towneley Green (1836-1899), was also a watercolour painter and illustrator. A large sale of the works of Charles Green and his brother was held at Christie’s, London, in 1900.
