The World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C, develops and promotes standard web technologies. Created in 1994, it is an international consortium directed by Tim Berners-Lee, the British man who invented the web itself in late 1990. Nick Crowe has portrayed Berners-Lee, along with the other members of the Management Committee, through a simple hand-engraved outline on glass, which casts a shadow onto the paper behind. The World Wide Web Consortium is an incredibly influential, but little known organisation. Although the people depicted in these portraits have a huge impact on our lives, we would probably not recognise them if we saw them on the street. By portraying them in such an intangible, ephemeral way, Crowe is commenting on the vaporous nature of the web and its organisational power structures.
Nick Crowe was born in Barnsley in 1968 and studied at Barnsley College of Art and the University of Hull. His work has been exhibited widely, both in this country and abroad, and he is a contributor to several art magazines. He has acted as a curator and has held visiting lectureships at numerous art schools, including Goldsmiths, the Slade and the Ruskin School of Art. Nick Crowe lives and works in Manchester.
