An eerie yellow light artificially illuminates the night sky above an urban scene. Devoid of signs of life, the identity of the place is ambiguous. Glowing vibrantly with a flood of light, a spiral building surrounded by dazzling floodlights prevents a view of what is inside.
'Untitled (A Machine for Living In)' is from a series produced in 1999, and depicts the concrete landscape of the Bluewater shopping centre in Kent. Dan Holdsworth photographed mainly at night, using twenty- to thirty- second exposures. The process of time-lapse photography resulted in an enigmatic image that seems to pulsate with light.
