Anthony Day's lyrical painting 'Autumn Fenland' reflects the vastness of the landscape he has been painting for over forty years. Day juxtaposes the seemingly weathered grasslands with an earthy green and brown autumn sky. These hues echo the artist's own understanding of the land. The son of a local farmer, Day turned to painting out of doors as a way of spending time in the countryside. He says of his work: "Farming became inseparable from my love of landscape and I returned to farm its beauty."

Anthony Day was born in Wicken, Cambridgeshire, in 1922. He received a further education and training grant after serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during and after the Second World War. Day studied at Cambridge School of Art for four years and went on to gain an Art Teacher's Diploma at Reading University. He has exhibited at over eighty one-man shows and many more group exhibitions, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Heffer Gallery and Kettle's Yard in Cambridge, as well as the Paris Salon and the English Gallery in Boston, USA. While this painting is made using watercolours, his large and dramatic landscapes are more often painted in gouache and, occasionally, in egg tempera.
