In a series of works, Ian Whittlesea painted the written addresses of different artists' studios around the world. By alluding to places only with text and not images, he indicated real spaces by their absence. 'Studio Paintings - Index' is a lithograph that replicates smaller versions of many of these paintings, each commemorating an association between the history of a place and an artist. Traditionally, artists recreate portraits and scenes in time. Whittlesea's paintings purposefully avoid pictorial reference. This focus only on the addresses of studios recalls the literary technique of James Joyce, whose novels "Ulysses" and "Finnegan's Wake" also listed the numerous addresses of the places where he had written each novel.
