Miniature versions of famous sites appear in five photographs by Mandy Lee Jandrell which are part of the Government Art Collection. They show representations of iconic sites in Britain, France, Egypt, India and China. Tourists in formal poses, photograph themselves against the recognisable backdrops. In reality, Jandrell's images are scenes from theme parks in Shenzhen, southeastern China, places that are dedicated to reproducing famous sites and sculptures. She was fascinated by their ability to condense the world, offering a manufactured thrill of experiencing sites without travelling. These images of modern tourism reflect one aspect of globalisation and its cultural impact, a subject that informs her work.
