    1A Love Lane, Kensington was the painting studio of English artist Samuel Palmer (1805-1881). A contemporary of William Blake, Palmer's paintings depicted idyllic scenes of pastoral landscapes. In this work by Ian Whittlesea, he has painted the words of Palmer's studio address, and in doing so, alludes to a real space without visually depicting it. Traditionally, artists recreate portraits and scenes in time. Whittlesea's paintings purposefully avoid pictorial reference. This focus only on the addresses of studios recalls the literary technique of James Joyce, whose novels "Ulysses" and "Finnegan's Wake" also listed the numerous addresses of the places where he had written each novel.

  • About the artist
    Ian Whittlesea was born in London in 1967. He studied for his BA at Chelsea School of Art between 1987 to1990, and for an MA in sculpture at the Royal College of Art (1990–92). He was nominated for the Jerwood Artists Platform Prize in 2003. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Melbourne, Amsterdam, London and Dublin.
